‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ reveals mithril’s origin story
Though they are potentially tainted by Sauron’s involvement, the rings do stop the rot when Gil-galad, Galadriel (Morfydd Clark), and Círdan (Ben Daniels) don them, allowing the Elves to stay put. Although they manage to save all four without any fatalities, Durin’s father decides to shut down the mining operation, much to Durin’s anger. It seems unlikely that Durin will let it rest forever, given the lore explained in The Lord of the Rings and, perhaps more importantly, mithril’s growing role in Rings of Power. Mithril eventually become priceless once it is no longer mined. But for now, all the dwarves know is that it is lighter than silk yet harder than iron.
Like everyone wearing hidden armor, Frodo pulls open his shirt to reveal the mithril only after everyone thinks he’s dead, amazing them all. The mail comes in handy once again when Frodo is captured by orcs in Return of the King. A new use of Mithril arrives on The Rings of Power in season two. Celebrimbor tells is mithril real his elven smith, Mirdania, that he had just enough Mithril left over from the elven Rings of Power to make one more creation. In its Ithildin form, Mithril is only visible in the moonlight and otherwise, it becomes invisible. We know that this precious version of Mithril will be used someday soon to build the Doors of Durin and cement a bond between elves and dwarves.
For people so in touch with the mountains, it’s exciting to discover an entirely new ore. Durin’s Folk have only just discovered the “grey glitter,” the dwarven name for Mithril on The Rings of Power. The timing of Elrond’s visit to seek help from the dwarves leads Durin to question his motives. And though Elrond didn’t know the true purpose at first, the elves are in fact seeking mithril. They believe it was created when a battle of good versus evil caused lightning to strike a tree containing the light of a Silmaril. Quench hardening does not work with metals that do not undergo the martensitic transition, but the elastic properties of metals more generally can be controlled by varying their microstructure through careful manufacture.
Men get their own set, which, at this point, seems sure to be made of mithril as well. Through its magical properties, mithril saved the Elves and soon the Dwarves, but it is dangerous. Sauron is planning something, and these mithril rings are a part of it. At this point, the Dwarves are keeping mithril a secret, knowing that as soon as the substance is common knowledge, it will be in high demand. However, Prince Durin gives Elrond a shard of mithril as a token of friendship. While the two discuss the substance, the mithril mine caves in, trapping four Dwarves.
It reflects only starlight and moonlight and marks the door at the West-gate to Khazad-Dûm. The helmets of Gondor’s guards of the citadel are also mithril. Gimli and his dwarven kin later rebuilt the gates of Minas Tirith using the precious metal. He eventually passes the mithril shirt along to his nephew Frodo for his journey to destroy the One Ring. It saves Frodo’s life as the fellowship passes through the very mines of Moria from whence the mithril came many generations before.
